How Featured Articles Are Selected
How we determine what is featured each week (process has evolved over the last couple of months)
Jack Mara | Aug 9, 2015
I am taking a break from discussing start-up challenges to provide transparency around how our featured article pool is selected. I did a similar blog in May, but our user base tripled since then and as 10Thoughts continues to grow our process for selecting articles evolves and (hopefully) improves. Our goal is to provide generally interesting article content to keep you well versed across a spectrum of business topics. We hope the content makes you think, sharpens your general management skill set and improves your ability to lead. We know you are busy, so we strive to insure every article you read on 10Thoughts is worth your time.
10Thoughts is based on the premise that the best way to find great content across the internet is to rely on recommendations from your peers. Algorithms can scrape the internet and find content containing different words – but they are still not sophisticated enough to provide a trustworthy view on article quality. Here are the components we use to provide you with content that is recommended, vetted and curated by your peers.
First, every article is recommended by a 10Thoughts user. This means every article has the stamp of approval of one of your talented peers. We generally receive 150 article recommendations each week.
Second, fifteen of our users are provided an “extended” title on all articles submitted to 10Thoughts each week. They vote on each article indicating a “3” if they would definitely read the article, a “2” if they might read the article and a “1” if they won’t read the article. Many readers actually enjoy doing this - it only takes 3 minutes a week and is a great way to see all the content that’s out there each week. Email me (email@example.com) if you are interested!
Third, the 10Thoughts team reads the top 30 articles as voted by the curators each week. We eliminate articles we believe are not featured article worthy. Generally this leaves us with 15 to 25 articles each week. This process is a little more subjective than I would like but it enables us to stand by every article we select and provides another filter to ensure the quality of the content.
We send articles to a random group of users on Mondays and see how these 15 to 25 articles perform. We then send the best 10 to the larger 10Thoughts group.
These steps were built over time, we found that each of these adds measurable value to our readers. Back when 10Thoughts first started I believed just step 1 was sufficient – it was not…
The quality of 10Thoughts each week is highly correlated to the amount of content we receive. We want more – more content will enable us to add more featured and continue to improve the overall value of 10Thoughts. Add The bookmarklet, it allows you to recommend content with one click right from your reading page.
Many of our users in the class of 2017 are starting business school this week – good luck and enjoy! For all those starting or returning to school, please consider our 10Thoughts Ambassador program.

What is 10Thoughts?
10Thoughts is a place where business professionals find the best content recommended by their talented colleagues and peers.
Where did it come from?
10Thoughts was founded by two brothers, Jack and Jeffrey Mara. It started at Darden Business School with students recommending articles for their classmates. It then expanded across the MBA community and into the broader business world.
Who recommends the articles?
Article recommendations on 10Thoughts come from one of two places:
How do I become a recommender?
You can apply right here!
And why should I become a recommender?
10Thoughts recommenders build their brand by sharing impactful articles with a highly talented community of readers.
We increase the professional exposure of our recommenders by linking their names directly to their LinkedIn profile – our readers can then check out the people recommending content they enjoying.
10Thoughts recommenders are always welcome to blog on the site and readers can opt to subscribe to individual recommenders to receive all the content they recommend.
What’s a company platform?
We offer customized 10Thoughts platforms for companies and institutions. Find more info here
What is the “recommended by” section of the website?
Recommended by is a place to see content recommended by business professionals in different fields (for example: recommended by MBAs, by consultants, by lawyers, by financial services professionals).
